Joel was active in the Militia, and served in the Revolution, having the rank of Colonel. During the Guilford Incident between New York and Vermont concerning the jurisdiction over the Southern Vermont , he and his father took sides with New York. He was elected a member of the Assembly in 1784 from Cumberland County, as it was then called. He was also commissioned an Adjutant by the State of New York about that time. His wife Sarah, born circa 1750, died in Guilford circa 1821. Soon after, Joel moved to Ellisburg, NY to live with his son Jotham. He died there 14 October 1825.
