This family arrived in Canada in the Port of Quebec on 29 September 1883 aboard the S.S. Parisian, which sailed from Liverpool 02 September 1883. Arrival record obtained; Archives of Canada Film C-4533. On ship's arrival record the family surname is listed as "Barker".

This family settled on a farm on Wolfe Island in the St. Lawrence River just outside the mouth of Kingston Harbour. In 1889 at time of son Benjamin Lee's birth this family was living in Kingston Station, Kingston Township, Frontenac County, Ontario.

At 19 years of age Will, the eldest son, succumbed to the urge to head West.
1898, the year of the Gold Rush lured him to try his luck. But instead of the goldfields he fell in love with the rolling ranchland just east of the Rockies and he turned back from Kamloops to settle and work in the High River - Calgary area of the territory that was to become Alberta some 7 years later.

In 1900 Will, Mark, and their father Jesse, filed homestead claims for 160 acres each some 10 miles east of the town known as Calgary and proceeded to put down roots.
